About this work
A large four-legged animal, whitish-grey with patches of pink and dark shadow, is viewed from behind as it stands among tall green and gold grass. Its small head turns slightly to one side beneath a sky of warm orange streaked with heavy black horizontal strokes suggesting distant clouds or birds.
Broad, loaded brushstrokes build the animal's bulk in grey, white and magenta, while the grass below is scratched in thin overlapping lines of green, ochre and red. The warm sunset palette against the animal's cool shadowed form gives the scene a heavy, dramatic stillness.
